March 22, 2013 Forecast Results

Here are the results of the first forecast posted in California Water Shortage Spring 2013 Forecast on March 12th. The forecast read as follows:

Around this date, a stormy and windy system is indicated over southern California that may bring precipitation.

Results
On the 20th of March, rain and high mountain snow hit the Northwest, and northern and central California. None was reported in southern California. The National Weather Service map below shows the storm system.

The forecast also mentioned a windy system over southern California. On the 22nd, the National Weather Service reported in their Southwest California Area Forecast Discussion that gusty north winds would continue to impact portions of the southland and then shift to the northeast on the 23rd.

More Snow for the Northeast and New England


Meteorologist Joe D’Aleo points out in a recent post on his website http://www.icecap.us/ that so far the winter of 2012-13 from November to February has been ranked the 4th snowiest. First place is taken by the winter of 1977-78. Second place belongs to the winter of 2009-10, and third place is held by the winter of 2010-11.

According to astrometeorological calculations, the Northeast and New England are not out of the woods yet. The 20th Century’s top long-range weather forecaster, G.J. McCormack, who used planetary cycles as the basis for his forecasts stated that atmospheric disturbances are intensified when the Sun forms aspects with two or more planets of opposite natures. This scenario is about to play out between March 27-30, 2013 when the Sun conjoins Venus and Uranus. These two planets are opposite in nature from an astrometeorological standpoint. Venus increases moisture and warmth while Uranus corresponds to cold, dry air masses and erratic winds. Being aspected together by the Sun will create disruptive atmospheric conditions at this time and points toward another winter storm, even though we’ve officially enter spring, for the Northeast and New England on those dates. A similar setup takes place over Alaska on these dates.

Weather extremes such as droughts, floods, hurricane, tornadoes, and heat waves have become more common.

Scientists have studied this issue and come to the opposite conclusion: extreme events are becoming LESS common. Atlantic hurricanes were much more numerous from 1950 to 1975 than from 1975 to present. Hailstorms in the US are 35% less common than they were fifty years ago. Extreme rainfall in the US at the end of the 20th century is comparable to what it was at the beginning of the 20th century. Roger Pielke, Jr, in the journal Climatic Change (1999) said “it is essentially impossible to attribute any particular weather event to global warming.” For flooding, Pielke did list a number of important non-climatic factors that have the potential to influence flooding in the future, including deteriorating dams and levees, changes in land use, building in flood-prone areas, governmental policies, as well as other societal influences. California Water Shortage Spring 2013 Forecast


In a recent Accuweather post entitled Concerns Mount for California Water Shortage, Jillian Macmath informs us of a possible upcoming water shortage for California if there is below-normal precipitation going into the spring season. November and December of last year resulted in an above-average water supply for northern California, but January and February were the driest combined months on record. Meteorologists are concerned that the spring season may be a dry one and thus worsen the situation.

Looking back at the planetary influences at work in January and February, we can see the reason for the dryness of those two months. Basing our investigation off the key season chart, we see that from January 10th through the 20th, Mars, the planet of heat and dryness was transiting over the Golden State. Then between the 25th and 31st of January, Mercury, another planet associated with high pressure, passed over California. The Sun also transited across the state from January 30th till February 10th in the sign Aquarius—another dry sign.

This spring, the seasonal chart places Saturn in Scorpio just off the West Coast. Although Saturn is not the only player involved in formulating a long-range forecast, it would be beneficial to know if aspects to Saturn coincide with precipitation. The last time Saturn transited Scorpio was during 1982-84. Doing a little research, I found that there’s good evidence to support the idea that Saturn in Scorpio does bring some precipitation. The current seasonal chart for this winter also placed Saturn in Scorpio over California. I found that hard aspects to Saturn by other planets did coincide with rain events. In looking at different charts for the spring season in California, I discovered that other astrometeorological events such as another transit of Mars over the state and the Sun’s conjunction to Mars apparently will outweigh the Saturn factor. Below are some of the dates these important aspects take place. So in conclusion, the spring season does look predominantly dry.

Around this date, a stormy and windy system is indicated over southern California that may bring precipitation.

March 31
In and around this date, another storm system is indicated over southern California.

April 13-25
During this period, Mars transits over the state of California in the Full Moon chart. This usually coincides with a dry period.

April 17
Specifically around this date, the Sun conjoins Mars and is localized over California in the Full Moon chart. This corresponds to warmer temperatures and dry conditions. At times, storms can ensue after the heat.

April 22
At this time one of the above mentioned aspects to Saturn takes places. We should see a front or low pressure area form off the U.S. West Coast, which may bring precipitation inland.

April 27
At this time Mars triggers the Full Moon chart increasing heat and dryness. Sometimes this results in storms being generated after the heat.

April 28
Around this time, the Sun will oppose Saturn off the U.S. West Coast bringing a front or low pressure system there. The opposition should also affect areas of southeastern California.

May 1
A vigorous low pressure area or front forms around now and moves inland bringing stormy conditions.

May 3
Warm and dry conditions with the possibility of increased wind velocities are indicated in and around this date.

May 5-20
In another key chart, Mars will transit across California now bringing warm and dry conditions.

May 7-8
Mercury's aspect to Mars will bring and warm and dry atmosphere with increased wind velocities around this time.

May 11
The Sun's conjunction to Mercury is known to bring high pressure, which we should expect around this date.

May 12-31
The majority of aspects at this time indicate fair weather with not much chance of rain.

June 3
Due to an aspect involving Saturn, somewhat cooler weather and higher humidity may be expected but this is not necessarily a rainmaker.

June 7-8
Mercury makes some important aspects to Uranus and Pluto. This may bring an anomalous weather pattern to the Pacific Northwest and California. It may mean stormy or windy conditions or perhaps extremes of cold before and after these dates.

June 12
Around this time a cold front lowers temperatures and perhaps triggers a little precipitation.

June 13-20
The rest of the season appears to be mostly dry.

Winter Storm Saturn Fulfills Long-range Weather Forecast!

In my Winter 2012-13 forecast posted on December 12, 2012, I issued the following forecast:

The Sun's last aspect during the winter season is its conjunction to Mercury. This will affect the Plains and Mississippi Valley areas. Watch for a strong cold front ushering in windy and stormy conditions there.

Results
The Weather Channel has named the winter storm that is developing over the Midwest, "Winter Storm Saturn." According to their latest report, "Tonight the heavier snow...falls in the northern Mississippi Valley as snow moves into eastern Iowa, southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois." This is the area mentioned in my post almost 3 months ago.

The Accuweather headline for today states, "High Winds to Disrupt Travel in Midwest After Snowstorm." All the particulars mentioned here confirm the long-range forecast that pinpointed the Plains, the Mississippi Valley, and windy and stormy conditions. The map below is from Accuweather.

February 24-27, 2013

This Full Moon period marks an important time since it coincides with the Sun's square to Jupiter. While this probably indicates mild and breezy conditions for the Plains, further east, over Mississippi and Alabama the extra added influence of Mercury conjunct Mars should slam those states with a strong low pressure system bringing high winds and precipitation.
Results
The severe weather over Mississippi and Alabama arrived on schedule. The Accuweather map below shows the severe weather that struck the very area on the 25th. 24 Fire Danger So. Texas

Significant downpours and localized flash flooding were expected over this area along with a few tornadoes. While I called for mild and breezy conditions over the Plains, it was anything but mild. It was windy, as shown on the above map, but a blizzard raged over parts of the Plains as well.

Forecast

February 28-March 2, 2013
In two different posts, I issued what appears to be contradictory forecasts--but maybe not. The first one read as follows:

The Sun sextiles Pluto and trines Saturn. This will bring fair and cool conditions to the Plains and also to the Great Basin area and western states.

Results
The Weather Channel map below (March 1) shows the high pressure that held sway over much of the area. They reported that much of the West would be dry on Friday, March 1st.


Feb 28

The second forecast appeared in a post about drought relief for the Plains. In this forecast I mentioned that we could expect moisture over the Rockies and Plains around the 28th of February due to the conjunction of Venus and Neptune. Although much of the area was under high pressure, the National Weather Service reported of Feb. 28th that a disturbance would move over Colorado dropping between 1 and 4 inches of snow and that portions of Oklahoma and Texas would have isolated thunderstorms.

Blizzard Fulfills Long-range Weather Forecast

Thursday's (Feb 21) major storm brought blizzard conditions to the central Plains as well as much needed drought relief to the area, thus fulfilling the long-range weather forecast posted on The Weather Alternative on February 10th.

In the original post entitled Timing the Relief for Drought-Stricken U.S. Plains, the forecast read, "We can also expect the arrival of moisture over the Plains area in and around Feb. 21 when the Sun conjoins Neptune." The Accuweather map below shows conventional forecaster's assessment of the extent of the expected storm.

19 Blizzard

Yesterday, February 23rd, in a post entitled Wheat Belt Drought Relief Thanks to Big Snow, Accuweather reported that the storm delivered over a foot of snow across a sizable area of the central Plains. This translated into the equivalent of between 1/3 to 2/3 inches of rain, with some places receiving double that amount.

Currently, the U.S. Plains is in a serious drought. Check the aforementioned post for more dates when moisture may possibly arrive over the Plains. The following Drought Monitor map shows conditions as of Feb 12, 2013.

January 2013 Forecast Results

I presented two forecasts for January 2013 back in December. The first one covered the period from January 23-25.

Forecast

The Sun now sextiles Uranus and trines Jupiter. The Sun-Uranus combination affects the Northeast U.S. and New England where a cold wave will bring frosty conditions and northwest winds. The Sun-Jupiter pair affects the Deep South and East Central states with high pressure keeping things cool and dry.
Results

22 Norteast cold

The above Accuweather map of January 22nd tells the story that fulfilled the forecast. The Accuweather post was entitled "More Cold Air Coming." As for the Deep South and East Central states, the Weather Channel said that on the 23rd and 24th the region was to remain dry, which also fulfilled the long-range forecast.

The second forecast was for January 29-31.

Forecast

The Sun will square Saturn now. Since Saturn affects the West Coast and the Great Basin area this winter, we can expect rain and heavy snow followed by a cold wave.
Results

The Weather Channel reported that rain and mountain snow would affect the Northwest coast, and that snow and snow showers would affect eastern Washington and Oregon into the central Rockies with snow ranging from 2 to 10 inches. They also mentioned that a minor Santa Ana wind event would be underway with winds from 15 to 30 mph. This is interesting because in my recent post Testing Astrometeorology Part 2, we saw how Saturn's reputation for bring an east wind played out when Saturn is placed over the western U.S. Here we see that theme once again as Santa Ana winds are easterly winds.

Timing the Relief for Drought-Stricken U.S. Plains

The U.S. drought monitor for February 2013 shows extreme to exceptional drought affecting the U.S. Plains. According to climatologist Mark Svoboda of the University of Nebraska's Drought Mitigation Center, precipitation in the Plains region has been running about 3 to 6 inches shy of normal levels since October. Some areas, over the last nine months, are about 16 inches short of much-needed moisture. To make matters worse, the unrelenting drought shows no signs of abating.

On the pages of this blog, I’ve discussed the planetary influences that govern moisture. Back in November of 2011, I mentioned how the drought in the Texas area would be mitigated in the spring and summer of 2012 by the presence of Neptune in certain key charts. This forecast was confirmed by September of 2012.

In this post, we’ll look at Neptune’s positions in the key seasonal charts for 2013-14. Fortunately, Neptune is placed over the Plains area in many of the maps. We’ll look at some possible dates when rain might be expected. Of course this is not a complete view of these seasons.

Winter 2012-13
In the chart for the winter season 2012-13 (see below), Neptune occupies the 105th line of west longitude that runs through the Rocky Mountains. Just recently Neptune’s position was activated by the conjunction of Mars on Feb. 4th and by the conjunction of Mercury on Feb. 6th. On the 4th, a number of news articles appeared on the internet commenting on the moisture relief headed toward the Plains although it was not nearly enough. It does confirm, however, the effect that aspects to Neptune can have on precipitation. We can also expect the arrival of moisture over the Plains area in and around Feb. 21st when the Sun conjoins Neptune, and around the 28th when Venus conjoins it.


Winter 2012-13

Spring 2013
The map for the 2013 spring season (see below) also places Neptune over the Mississippi Valley. This is close to the Plains and will affect it when Neptune is aspected. There are a few aspects in May that carry the potential for rain. Around May 13th, Venus will square Neptune, and then on the 18th Mercury will do the same. Around May 26th, the Sun will make its square to Neptune as well. June 7th is another key date when Mars squares Neptune.
Spring 2013

Summer 2013
The summer 2013 map once again places Neptune over the Mississippi Valley. Some key dates to watch for are July 26th and August 25-26.
Fall 2013
In the fall 2013 map (see below), Neptune no longer appears over the Plains area, but Saturn in Scorpio (a water sign) runs along the 96th degree of west longitude through the Plains. We can expect moisture from in and around the following dates: July 1, July 27, August 11, Sept 9, and Sept 18. (These dates for Fall 2013 are wrong. They should have read Oct 6, Nov 1, and Nov 20)
 
Fall 2013

Winter 2013-14

By the onset of winter 2013-14 (see below), Neptune once again appears in the seasonal map. A number of minor aspects to Neptune may bring some precipitation in January 2014 around the 4th, 8th, 15th, and 18th. Then in February watch for the 1st, 18th, 21st, and 23rd.

The spring, summer, and winter maps for 2014 also place Neptune over the Plains, while the fall map places Saturn there. Hopefully, these positions indicate that the drought will be steadily decreasing between now and the end of 2014.

December 21-31, 2012 Long-range Forecast Results

Here are the first results of long-range winter weather forecasts issued on Dec. 12, 2012. These forecasts were based on the Sun's aspects to Neptune, Uranus, and Pluto. In some recent posts, we've looked at the importance of the angles the Sun makes to other planets. (See Testing Astrometeorology Part 1 and Testing Astrometeorology Part 2) Let's see how they turned out.

The first forecast was for December 21-23, 2012.

Forecast
The first aspect the Sun makes is a sextile to Neptune. Throughout the winter season, Neptune will affect the Rocky Mountains. Neptune is not known for cold winter weather but rather warm and mild conditions when aspected by the Sun. At this time, expect rising temperatures and a generally pleasant atmosphere over the Rockies.

Results
The National Weather Service map below is for December 21st. Here we see that the area over the Rockies is mostly controlled by a high pressure system, which normally equates with fair conditions.

Forecast
December 24-26, 2012
At this time, the Sun will square Uranus which affects the Northeast and New England. Unlike Neptune, Uranus is a cold weather breeder and when aspected by the Sun's square promises a cold wave with increasing winds, sleet, and snow.

Results
On the 24th, The Weather Channel reported "Winter Storm Euclid pounds Plains and East" then on the 26th they warned that 1 to 2 inches of heavy rain would drench Virginia, the Delmarva, and south New Jersey. Damaging wind gusts and a possible tornado were to be expected. Frozen precipitation and around 6 inches of snow was forecast for Pennsylvania. The storm would then spread into New York and New England with wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph or more. The Accuweather map below shows the conditions expected on the 26th.

25 Northeast

Forecast
December 24-31, 2012
The Sun's square to Uranus on the 25th as well as the Sun's conjunction to Pluto on the 30th, will also affect areas of Europe from Germany and Italy over to Poland and Greece with winter storm potential. We should also keep our eyes on Alaska for a strong winter storm at this time.

Results
Europe
On the 25th, heavy outbreaks of snow were felt across Norway, Sweden, and southern Finland. Snow changed to rain across the Baltic states, and gales were experienced across northern Europe. By the 28th, heavy snow hit the former Yugoslavia with heavy rain and sleet affecting southern Italy. The 30th brought heavy showers and rain to Poland.

Alaska
The National Weather Service map below is for December 26th. The warning for that day read: PACIFIC STORM WILL BRING BLIZZARD CONDITIONS TO SOUTHWEST
ALASKA. On the 28th, the NWS issued a winter storm warning: WINTER STORM TO BRING SNOW AND WIND TO SOUTHWEST ALASKA TONIGHT INTO SATURDAY.

Long-range Weather Forecasts Winter 2012-13

In some recent posts, we looked at the Sun's conjunctions and oppositions to Saturn and the effects these aspects had on weather systems according to the study of astrometeorology. (Testing Astrometeorology Part 1 and Testing Astrometeorology Part 2) In this post, we'll look at the aspects the Sun makes to planets throughout the winter season of 2012-13 and see what we might expect to happen to the weather.

The winter season starts this year on December 21st. As the season progresses, the Sun will make different aspects to the other planets. We'll look at what areas of the U.S. these aspects will affect and what type of weather we should expect.

December 21-23, 2012
The first aspect the Sun makes is a sextile to Neptune. Throughout the winter season, Neptune will affect the Rocky Mountains. Neptune is not known for cold winter weather but rather warm and mild conditions when aspected by the Sun. At this time, expect rising temperatures and a generally pleasant atmosphere over the Rockies.

December 24-26, 2012
At this time, the Sun will square Uranus which affects the Northeast and New England. Unlike Neptune, Uranus is a cold weather breeder and when aspected by the Sun's square promises a cold wave with increasing winds, sleet, and snow.

December 24-31, 2012
The Sun's square to Uranus on the 25th as well as the Sun's conjunction to Pluto on the 30th, will also affect areas of Europe from Germany and Italy over to Poland and Greece with winter storm potential. We should also keep our eyes on Alaska for a strong winter storm at this time.

January 23-25, 2013
The Sun now sextiles Uranus and trines Jupiter. The Sun-Uranus combination affects the Northeast U.S. and New England where a cold wave will bring frosty conditions and northwest winds. The Sun-Jupiter pair affects the Deep South and East Central states with high pressure keeping things cool and dry.

January 29-31, 2013
The Sun will square Saturn now. Since Saturn affects the West Coast and the Great Basin area this winter, we can expect rain and heavy snow followed by a cold wave.

February 20-22, 2013
The Sun will make its conjunction to Neptune which, as stated earlier, affects the Rockies. There will be a major weather pattern change that brings rising temperatures, mist or fog, and possibly a low pressure area to the Rockies and into the Plains. During winter, Neptune often coincides with thaws.

February 24-27, 2013
This Full Moon period marks an important time since it coincides with the Sun's square to Jupiter. While this probably indicates mild and breezy conditions for the Plains, further east, over Mississippi and Alabama the extra added influence of Mercury conjunct Mars should slam those states with a strong low pressure system bringing high winds and precipitation.

February 28-March 2, 2013
The Sun sextiles Pluto and trines Saturn. This will bring fair and cool conditions to the Plains and also to the Great Basin area and western states.

March 3-5, 2013
The Sun's last aspect during the winter season is its conjunction to Mercury. This will affect the Plains and Mississippi Valley areas. Watch for a strong cold front ushering in windy and stormy conditions there.

Forecast Results for the Solar Eclipse of Nov. 13, 2012

Here are the results of the weather forecasts for the Solar Eclipse of Nov. 13, 2012. These were posted on June 10th, 2012. The solar eclipse affected a number of places due to the placement of the Sun, Moon, Mercury, and Neptune. Severe weather was expected over these locations roughly between Nov 12-15.

The first location was located around 133 west longitude and 41 north latitude, which lies off the West Coast of the United States. The forecast suggested a powerful low pressure area would develop there and affect the U.S. West Coast. The Weather Channel map below for the 16th shows a low pressure area headed toward California and the Pacific Northwest.

On the 15th, the Weather Channel headline stated " Rain and Snow Bombard the West Coast." On the 16th, the  headline read " Storm Parade Rolls on for the West Coast."

The next area was in the western Atlantic around 53 west longitude and 23 north latitude. I expected tropical storm or hurricane formation around there. Nothing very impressive resulted. The National Weather Service reported the following on the 13th:

ISOLATED SHOWERS AND POSSIBLE ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS ARE
OCCURRING FROM 18N-32N BETWEEN 56W-70W. THIS LARGE AREA OF
SURFACE TROUGHING IS FORECAST TO LIFT NORTHWARD OVER THE NEXT 24
TO 36 HOURS WITH CYCLOGENESIS OCCURRING IN THE PROCESS

Another important area was found over the eastern Europe. I expected heavy downpours there. The big news between the 13th and 15th was the flooding in Italy, which is a bit farther west but still "in the zone" as it were. The map below is an aerial view of Orte near Rome.

On the 16th, outbreaks of rain occurred across the Baltic States in Russia.

The next area in the forecast was Korea. Here, I expected a tropical system or powerful low pressure area. I don't have much in the way of weather records for the area but the map below is for the 12th. Low pressure moving through Japan and Korea brought showers and colder weather according to one weather source.

The last area mentioned in the forecast was Brazil and Uruguay. I didn't come across anything major for this time period. Below, is the weather map for the 15th which shows at least some storminess over Brazil.

October 21-November 11, 2012 Fall Forecast Results

This is the next installment of some recent long-range weather forecast results. These forecasts were made back in August and September of this year. In the August 18th post for the Central U.S., the following forecast was made:

October 21-25, 2012
Cooler and stormy around the 21st. The Sun's parallel and trine to Neptune around the 23rd should increase southerly air flow and temperatures with perhaps mild or foggy conditions. Then, on the 25th when the Sun conjoins Saturn, things turn stormier most likely due to a cold front.

Results
The general idea of the forecast-- cooler and stormy conditions preceded by a southerly air flow bringing rising temperatures--was fulfilled. Here's a quote from The Weather Channel posted on October 21st.

"A boundary between mild air streaming northward through the Midwest and Ohio Valley and cooler air lurking over the Upper Midwest and northern Plains will be the battleground for some showers and storms on Monday (Oct 22)."

Then on the 23rd, The Weather Channel reported that a strong cold front was then poised to move through the region on the 24th through the 27th. Behind the front temperatures tumbled 20 to 40 degrees.

The next forecast was also for the Plains and Mississippi Valley area.

November 1-2, 2012
Saturn now moves closer to the Mississippi Valley and receives an adverse aspect from Mars. This should result in atmospheric disturbance over the eastern Plains and Mississippi Valley.

Results
This forecast found its fulfillment in a quick moving disturbance that brought some rain showers from Missouri to Ohio on November 3rd. Some light snow and wintry precipitation also was experienced across parts of eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota.

The following Weather Channel map is for November 1st and shows a low pressure over Missouri.

Results
Western Washington and northwest Oregon experienced some rain showers on November 2nd and 3rd. The Weather Channel map below is for the 2nd and shows the front entering the West Coast.

Southerly winds bring increasing temperatures.

Results
Temperatures did increase but not exactly because of southerly winds. In this case the winds were northwest winds which brought warm, dry air to the West Coast. Accuweather headlines for Nov. 3rd stated Record-Breaking Heat Returing to Southern California. They also pointed out that very warm temperatures would persist until the 6th. The Accuweather map below shows the warm up.

The last forecast was for the eastern U.S., posted on September 9th.

November 9-11, 2012
The transit Sun triggers Venus and Mars which is known to increase temperatures but also carries the potential for storminess throughout the eastern section of the U.S.

Results
The warmth described in the forecast materialized over the eastern U.S. on the weekend of the 10th and 11th. The Weather Channel reported that temps were from near average to 18 degrees above average. There was also showery rain from central and western Upstate New York to Virginia preceded by gusty southerly winds on the 11th.

Testing Astrometeorology Part 2


In Testing Astrometeorology Part 1, I looked at the effect that Sun-Saturn oppositions are reported to have on weather systems. In this test of astrometeorology, I want to see if the system of long-range weather forecasting based on planetary cycles that has been handed down to us over the centuries is reliable. There are basically three components that make up the system. When taken together, they should provide us with the following information: what kind of weather we should expect, when we should expect it, and where we should expect it.

The “what” is determined by the natures of the planets involved. In the case of the Sun-Saturn opposition, tradition tells us cold, stormy periods delivering rain, snow, hail, etc., depending on the season in question, are to be expected. The “when” is shown by the dates on which the aspect takes place. This can be found by consulting an ephemeris that lists the date and time of planetary aspects. The “where” can be determined by erecting key astrological charts that show where the planets in question fall across the earth’s surface. In Part 1, I used the Cardinal Solar Ingress chart for this purpose since this is the main chart for the season in question.

In this post, I’ll look at some Sun-Saturn conjunctions using the same criteria. Let’s see if the what, when, and where can be reliably determined by this method. If so, then astrometeorology should be a dependable tool for making long-range weather forecasts since we can know when and where these aspects will take place months and years before they do.

According to G. J. McCormack, the 20th Century’s most able long-range weather forecaster, the Sun-Saturn conjunction is similar in effect to the Sun-Saturn opposition. In all seasons, McCormack states that the conjunction brings low pressure areas with heavy precipitation, cold, and easterly winds. The one exception McCormack mentions is Saturn’s transit through the zodiacal sign Leo, which brings hot weather since Saturn “concentrates the influence of the sign in which it may be posited at any time.” Since Leo is a hot, dry sign, Saturn here brings hot, dry weather. Then, when the Sun conjoins Saturn in Leo, the heat wave is broken. Let’s look at some recent Sun-Saturn conjunctions and see how they fair.

As seen below, the Solar Ingress map for the summer of 2003 placed the Sun-Saturn conjunction over 104 west longitude. We should expect to see its effects over the Rockies and Plains.

The Weather Channel map below is for June 24, 2003. We can see a low pressure system over the exact area mentioned above with rain affecting the Rockies and a stationary front across the Northern Plains.

On the 23rd, The Weather Channel reported “Scattered severe storms and isolated tornadoes will do a substantial amount of saber rattling from southeastern Wyoming into the Upper Midwest, especially across eastern South Dakota, much of Nebraska, southern Minnesota and northern Iowa. Locally heavy downpours will deluge pretty much the same areas, too, especially during the overnight hours both tonight and tomorrow as scattered storms cluster into unruly gangs.”


The Weekly Weather and Crop Bulletin for the week of June 22-28, 2003 reported that cool weather in Montana, the Dakotas, and western Nebraska was a much as 10 degrees below normal. Widespread beneficial precipitation accompanied the lower temperatures in Wyoming and northern Utah. Between the 22nd and 25th, severe storms and more than 75 tornadoes erupted across the Plains and upper Midwest.

The Sun-Saturn conjunction took place over 68 west longitude which runs through eastern Maine.

The conjunction took place in Leo. As mentioned above, Saturn in this sign can bring heat. Saturn entered Leo on the 16th of July and the National Weather Service began issuing excessive heat watches for Delaware and Washington D.C. on the 17th. Heat continued to plague the Northeast and New England. The Sun-Saturn conjunction took place on the 23rd. Shortly thereafter, on the 26th the heat wave was broken. The Weather Channel reported that “after an extended period of hot and humid conditions, residents of the Northeast will finally get a break as a significant cold front slides through the region.”

Saturn was also in Leo during this period. The first week of August brought record heat to the Northeast. The Sun’s conjunction with Saturn on the 7th broke the heat wave. Accuweather headlines for the 7th read “Cold Front Takes Aim on the Northeast” The front brought locally strong to severe storms. The following Weather Channel map for the 8th shows the cold front.

Here we find the Sun-Saturn conjunction over 106 west longitude.

Temperatures were 5 to 20 degrees below average in Montana, Wyoming, eastern Idaho, northern Utah, and Colorado according to the Weather Channel’s September 4th report.

September 17, 2009

This next example is more than a Sun-Saturn conjunction and as such really does not fit in this series. At this time Saturn was in exact opposition to Uranus. So the Sun came along and conjoined Saturn as well as opposed Uranus. They were over the Mississippi Valley. This was a longer lasting influence due to the slower moving planets which lasted from the 17th through the 26th.

During this period a pesky, slow-moving low pressure area drenched the Southeast as can be seen in the Weather Channel map for the 17th. As much as 4 to 8 inches of rain fell from northeastern Texas to the central Appalachians. Between the 20th and 26th, severe flooding affected a broad area around northern Georgia. Four inches of rain fell for a second week from northern and central Mississippi eastward into the southern Appalachians.

The Sun-Saturn conjunction appears over 119 west longitude.

Blazing heat baked the entire Southwest U.S. at this time. What stands out is Saturn’s association with an east wind. In this area of the country, an east wind does not import any moisture because it comes from the interior, dry desert areas of the Great Basin etc. At this time the normal onshore flow that keeps this area cool was replaced by an offshore flow or east wind bringing high heat.

Conclusion
By and large, the Sun-Saturn conjunction appears to live up to its reputation as a breeder of cold weather, low pressure areas, heavy precipitation, and east wind. Only in the last example was there no precipitation, but considering the time of year, and the geographical location, we can understand why. An east wind over New England blows off the sea and often brings a “backdoor cold front” with plenty of moisture. An east wind, however, over the desert Southwest has access to hot, dry air from desert regions.
