March 7-9, 2011 West Coast Storm

Our last lunar eclipse was the full moon of December 21, 2010. The stormy conditions promised by this eclipse have been waiting off the Pacific Northwest coast for a celestial trigger to activate it.

Between the 7th and 9th of March, the planet Mercury will provide the necessary jolt to set things moving as it parallels and conjoins Uranus. These two together indicate strong cold fronts that excite windy and stormy conditions.

February 20-23, 2011 Forecast Results

The Weather Alternative forecast for February 20-23, 2011, related how the triple conjunctions of Mercury, Mars, and Neptune would produce a strong low pressure system over the North American West Coast. The low pressure area would bring precipitation and windy conditions to British Colombia, the Pacific Northwest, California, Idaho, and Nevada, since Neptune occupied the 116th degree of west longitude. The forecast, posted on December 19, 2010, also mentioned that eastern Australia may be subject to heavy rain.
Feb 17
The forecast also pointed out that the storm system could actually get under way as early as the 17th due to other factors. The above Weather Channel map is for the 17th and shows the rain and snow beginning to enter California. The map below this one is for the 19th where we see a more full-fledged storm underway.
Feb 19
Other storm system entered the West Coast area on the 21st and 22nd.

Australia
The Bureau of Meteorology reported today that in the last 24 hours rainfall of up to 240mm has caused river rises in coastal rivers between Cooktown and Cardwell in northeastern Australia.

Recent Forecast Success and Failure

In my post of Nov 14, 2010 entitled Midwest Winter Cold and Heating Oil, I issued two long-range weather predictions.
Feb 12
The first one was for a cold front over the Midwest between February 12-13, 2011. The above Weather Channel map for Feb 12 shows the cold front penetrating the area.
Feb 18
The second forecast from the same post was for February 17-19, 2011 and expected a low pressure area over the Great Lakes and Midwest. The above weather map from the National Weather Service is for Feb. 18th. Here we see a deep low pressure system above the Great Lakes with its attendant front and winds sweeping into the Midwest.

In Michigan, for example, the National Weather Service reported frequent wind gusts of 45 mph and widespread lake effect snow flurries. In some more limited areas significant snow fell.

17 Texas
Long-range weather forecasting at times can be tricky. In my post of December 21, 2010, entitled South Texas Wet Weather, I expected a wet weather pattern for the South Texas Plains region. No such weather materialized. It is from these forecast failures that the most important progress is made. As someone has rightly said, we learn more from 10 failures than we do from 10 successes.

The National Weather Service map above shows that on Feb. 17th there were high wind warnings and red flag warning for Feb 17th and 18th over southern and western Texas. Referring back to the First Quarter Moon map upon which I based the original forecast, I now notice that I did not realize that Mercury (the planet of gusty winds) was triggering the degree of the First Quarter Moon. I missed this important ingredient that would have led to a different forecast had I caught it--a lesson learned.

Scientists on God's Design

As we survey all the evidence, the thought insistently arises that some supernatural agency—or, rather, Agency—must be involved. Is it possible that suddenly, without intending to, we have stumbled upon scientific proof of the existence of a Supreme Being? Was it God who stepped in and so providentially crafted the cosmos for our benefit?--George Greenstein, astronomer

We are, by astronomical standards, a pampered, cosseted, cherished group of creatures. If the universe had not been made with the most exacting precision, we could never have come into existence. It is my view that these circumstances indicate the universe was created for man to live in.--John O'Keefe, astronomer at NASA

It seems to me that when confronted with the marvels of life and the universe, one must ask why and not just how. The only possible answers are religious. I find a need for God in the universe and in my own life.--Arthur L. Schawlow, Professor of Physics at Stanford University, 1981 Nobel Prize in physics

March 18-20, 2011 Special Full Moon

RN3
The Full Moon of March 19, 2011 will be a special type of full moon since it will coincide with the moon's perigee. When the moon is at perigee, it is at its closest approach to earth. This happens about every month but not every time there is a full moon. The illustration below shows the idea of perigee.
500px-Apogee_PSF_svg1-300x171

Not only will full moon and perigee coincide, but the Sun and Moon will be lined up with the earth's equator since it's almost the time of the vernal equinox (March 20th). The scientific term for this full moon at perigee is "perigee-syzygy" but astrologer Richard Nolle has coined the more vernacular term "supermoon."

Geophysicist, Fergus J. Wood, who was an expert on tidal phenomena, noted that since the new and full moons cause each month's highest tides, when the new or full moon coincides with the moon's perigee, tides are even higher. This is not too much of a problem, but when these larger tides are accompanied by strong on-shore winds, then damage can arise from coastal flooding. Although science can predict when these supermoons will occur years in advance, they cannot predict weather patterns that far in advance. This long-range weather prediction is the realm of astro-meteorology.

Fergus Wood seemed to be open to the fact that astronomical bodies might affect the weather. He said, "The seemingly above-average frequency of such concurrent events raises the question whether some interrelationship between respective astronomical and meteorological phenomena might exist which has not yet been established."

So let's look at what type of weather patterns are in store for the U.S. at this time and see if we can determine how this coming perigee-syzygy might affect those patterns.

On March 18th, we have an opposition between Mercury and Saturn--a definite storm breeder. On the 19th, we have a parallel between the Sun and Uranus. These two coincide with cold, dry air masses ushered in on northwest winds.

One possible interpretation of the different influences at work suggests that cold air will pour down through the Mississippi Valley and Great Lakes area and generate a storm system that is particularly intense from the Kentucky/Tennessee area down through the Florida Panhandle. The system then pushes eastward through the Mid-Atlantic. Since New England is under the influence of the Mercury-Saturn opposition the same storm system, or perhaps an independent one, affects that area. With the moon at perigee, these systems could be intensified.

God's Design

Astronomy [science] leads us to a unique event, a universe which was created out of nothing and delicately balanced to provide exactly the conditions required to support life. In the absence of an absurdly improbable accident, the observations of modern science seem to suggest an underlying, one might say, supernatural plan.--Nobel laureate Arno Penzias

It’s not just the universe as a whole that manifests design. Scientists find overwhelming design evidence no matter what volume size they investigate—the universe, our galaxy, planetary system, star, planets, cell, atom, and fundamental particles. On each of these size scales, evidence for extreme fine-tuning on the behalf of life and humanity persists.--Astrophysicist Hugh Ross

There is for me powerful evidence that there is something going on behind it all. It seems as though somebody has fine-tuned nature’s numbers to make the universe. The impression of design is overwhelming.--Paul Davies, British astrophysicist

This Day in Weather History

On February 10, 1899 a severe cold front hit the eastern United States. The temperature at Monterey, Virginia plunged to 29 degrees below zero!
individual%20icicles
What has convinced most students of astro-meteorology of its effectiveness is the study of past weather events and how they match up perfectly with planetary alignments. The deep freeze of Feb 10, 1899 is one such example.

According to astro-meteorology, Saturn and Uranus are planets that bring cold weather--much more so when they aspect each other. Another truism amongst astro-meteorologists is that when one of the outer planets (Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto) conjoins the degree of a previous eclipse, significant weather changes take place.

This is what happened with the Feb 10, 1899 deep freeze. A solar eclipse had taken place on December 13, 1898 at 5:43 am CST at 21 degrees Sagittarius. On Feb 9, 1899, Saturn reached this very degree of the zodiac triggering the eclipse. Saturn was also in aspect to Uranus bringing both their cold natures into the picture. Uranus was rising over the eastern United States while Saturn was rising off the U.S. East Coast.

Overview of UK Winter 2012-13

In a recent post we looked at an overview of the next three winters (2011-2013) in the U.S.

The conclusion was that due to the placement of the cold influence of Uranus over the eastern U.S., and the upcoming Uranus-Pluto alignment, the next 3 winters in the U.S. would bring similar weather to what we're experiencing during this present winter.

What will the next three winters be like for the UK and Europe? I've invited UK astro-meteorologist Tricia George to give her comments on the planetary influences operating during the winter of 2012-13.
13505

Tricia will be commenting on the astro map below, which shows the planetary positions that will be operating during the winter of 2012-13. One thing that I'd like to point out right away is that, just like in the U.S. map for winter 2012-13, Uranus is present. Here we find its influence through Germany, Austria, and Italy signifying a cold and stormy winter for Europe. Now on to Tricia and her analysis of UK weather and elsewhere.
Winter Ingress 2012

(Tricia) Winter 2012/2013 promises some sunny but breezy weeks with clear skies, but this weather will be interrupted by intermittent spells of freezing fogs, prolonged periods of drizzly rain and sleet showers, and more protracted periods of mists and clouds than is usual for our UK winter season.

Mercury's Influence
Looking at the map of planetary positions Mercury augurs well from the outset for the blue sky outlook over Ireland and western parts of Great Britain, combining with winds which may result in gale force blizzard type predominantly North Westerly activity due to the crossing with Mars to the NW of Scotland.

Venus' Influence
Venus close on the heel of these winds promises snow. Snow, frost and icy weather will have already arrived by October 2012, and more snowfall is heralded for December-February especially for southern regions of the UK with the position of Venus so close to our part of the world and featuring strongly near the mc/ic axis of the solstice chart. Venus crosses Mars off the NW coast of Scotland and these two are always the chief suspects in regard to snowy weather, sleet and blizzards, so I expect this configuration off the NW coast of Scotland to be sending in some snow blizzards.

Saturn's Influence
Saturn is moving in our direction also and in Scorpio it does not bode well for drains, boggy land and underground watering places which will be assaulted by the stormy conditions and flooding he is promising to bring our way over the winter period before March 2013.

Neptune's Influence
Taking a look at the Neptune influence on the chart it does look like some murky conditions are affecting a huge swathe of the SE sector of England from December if you watch the line Neptune forms from Budleigh Salterton up to Berwick upon Tweed in the NE of England. This looks likely to be outbursts of mists and freezing fog near the solstice, especially around low lying areas near rivers and lakes particularly and it does look to be affecting major airports! Such conditions will appear again over the ensuing winter months.

Saturn in Scorpio figures in many of the historical flood charts I have been looking at over the years, so it is set to bring some pretty murky conditions our way for the whole of 2013.....watch this space!

Asia
Looking further afield across to Asia the weather looks extremely revolutionary over Tibet where Uranus meets Mars in what looks to be an especially headline making if not seismic clash of energy.
I expect a large earthquake to make the news headlines after second week of November. The first eclipse in November 2012 is in Scorpio with Saturn so by the 22nd January we can expect some major seismic event when triggered by Mars.
