California Drought and El Niño: Fall 2015 Forecast

The accompanying map from the U.S Drought Monitor website shows the exceptional drought conditions over California as of August 25, 2015.

25 Cal Drought

The Climate Prediction Center's outlook for September, October, and November of this year in the next map shows above-average rainfall likely over Arizona and into California as well as other areas of the Desert Southwest. Recently, an AccuWeather post for Fall 2015 also held out a bit of hope by saying, "An expected strong El Niño will lead to beneficial rain for Southern California, but it may be delayed until late fall and winter."

Three month SON 2015

In this post, I'll consider some dates when drought conditions may be alleviated based on planetary cycles that culminate in September of this year and are then triggered later in October. The main player is the Jupiter-Neptune opposition of September 17, 2015. At the time of their opposition, they will be over 119 degrees west longitude through California.

From another perspective, the New Moon of September 13th places them along 112 west longitude through Arizona. The conjunctions and oppositions of Jupiter and Neptune induce isolated torrential downpours and are potential flash flood breeders according to G. J. McCormack, the 20th Century's ablest astro-meteorologist. So there is the potential that around the 17th of September we may see precipitation over this area as well as around September 26th when the Moon will conjoin and oppose this degree. But I'm even more concerned about a couple of dates in October.

On October 6th, Mars will oppose Neptune--another combination known for producing semi-tropical low pressure areas. This opposition will fall right on the Jupiter-Neptune opposition of September 17th mentioned above. Hence, this could be another period--in and around October 6th--where beneficial rain is seen over California. To a lesser extent, when Venus and Neptune oppose each other on October 16th and activate the same Jupiter-Neptune aspect there may be more moisture flowing in over the same area.

August 3-7, 2015 Forecast Results

My article Celestial Storm Warnings! - Predicting the 2015 Hurricane Season that appeared in the June 2015 edition of Dell Horoscope contained a forecast for August 3-7. There were two forecasts for this period: one for the west coast of Mexico over the states of Jalisco, Colima, Michoacan, and surrounding areas, and another for the U.S. Deep South centering over Alabama.

I expected some type of severe weather pattern such as above-average rainfall or a tropical system over the above-mentioned area of Mexico, and either a tropical system or severe thunderstorms and dangerous atmospheric conditions over the Deep South.

Mexico

The first map below shows the area over Mexico where planetary influence was centered and consequently where severe weather was expected.

Aug 4 2015 Mexico
On August 3rd, the National Meteorological Service of Mexico issued heavy rain warnings for Jalisco, Michoacan and other Mexican states effective August 4th. According to their advisory, Tropical Wave #24 would bring 2 to 3 inches of rain in Jalisco and other states, and 1 to 2 inches of rain to Colima, Michoacan and other areas.

Their forecast for August 5th called for 1 to 2 inches of rain over Jalisco and Michoacan, and on the 6th heavy rain was imminent over Jalisco, Michoacan, and surrounding territories. The weather map below is for August 4th and shows Tropical Wave #24 south of the forecast area with its associated rain over the forecast area.

Alabama

A low pressure area developed over coastal Georgia on the 3rd and is shown in the National Hurricane Center map below. Upper-level winds were not favorable for development.

03 Tropics

On the 6th, AccuWeather reported the following: "Birmingham and Tuscaloosa, Alabama, as well as Atlanta, Georgia, are expected to see strong thunderstorms through the evening as torrential downpours and gusty winds blow across the area."  The National Weather Service also issued a tornado warning for south central Pike County in Alabama. The AccuWeather map below shows the area affected.

July 23-27, 2015 Forecast Results

The next long-range weather forecast that appeared in the June 2015 edition of Dell Horoscope looked at the July 23-27 period. Due to the Mars-Uranus square of July 25th, I forecast tropical storm or hurricane potential off the U.S. East Coast around 69 west longitude and 37 north latitude. Let's see what happened.

Starting on July 20th, and for roughly the next 7 days, conventional meteorologists such as those at AccuWeather and The Weather Channel began to warn of the possibility of tropical storm formation both in the eastern Gulf of Mexico and off the U.S. Southeast coast. Below is the AccuWeather map for their forecast.

20 Tropical System

AccuWeather stated that the area of concern stretched from the Gulf of Mexico all the way to the waters off the Carolinas. This last area is around the area where I was expecting to see a tropical system develop.

Although no tropical system developed in spite of their forecasts or mine, from July 29-30, the National Weather Service reported on a low pressure center that moved to 72 west longitude/36 north latitude prompting gale warnings. The low pressure center was not far from the coordinates mentioned in my forecast -- approximately 180 miles away.

There was at least some kind of weather "reaction" over the area mentioned in the long-range forecast. But why the delay? I've seen this happen with other forecasts, and in these cases I've noticed that the expected weather pattern based on the planetary alignment in question sometimes does not manifest until the Moon either conjoins or opposes the degree of the planetary alignment. In this case, the Moon opposed the position of Mars on July 30th when the low pressure area developed. This is an area requiring further study.
